in need of a makeover

Lately I have been playing with the idea of exterior remodeling for homes that I have come across that are lovely...but need a little help cosmetically. In fact, their sheer need of a facelift is probably why they have been on the market for as long as they have been.

This home for example is in a fabulous neighborhood with 1.0 acre lots, has a spectacular backyard, has potential everywhere inside, lots of room to grow as a family, and is priced oh so well....but the exterior is *yawn.*

I am thinking of painting the brick, adding some shutters, and giving that front entrance more presence...double doors with a over hang of some sorts.

Something like this:

But with double doors like this:

But...I have no idea how to do this on a computer.

Anyone know who I could turn to? I would love to explore this home and show Mr. B a "vision" rather than me doodling all over a print out. Because I will be honest...I can't draw.

Cheers~

  1. Once you find out how to manipulate drawings/photos I would love to hear. We are needing to do the same thing with our own home. But it will wait as they start the excavation TOMORROW morning! (as long as it doesn't rain too much today!)

  2. I love the idea of a portico. I wanted one for my old house in GA that had no overhang at all. Never got around to it. My biggest concern was not enough room for a gable roof under the window. I have seen some with a shed type roof too. I love the picture of the blue door. The landscaping makes a big difference too. Maybe take out some of those bushes.

  4. I love that you are considering painting the brick. I love painted brick but it makes my husband go stiff-legged and nearly die!! The double door idea is simply divine!!!

  5. Just curious: are you looking into doing this as a side thing or because you guys are shopping for a new home? That house is beautiful and I love your ideas:)

  6. I don't know how to "paint" pictures. I'm sure it could be done in photoshop. Here is a link to a before and after a house was painted.

  7. I sure wish I knew how to do that too. If you figure it out, let us know. I love the look of painted brick and really want to paint the part of our house that is clad in the ugly red crappy looking stuff, not the pretty patinaed old brick.

  9. You definitely have such a good vision, girl. I would love to do something like the second picture to the front of my house! It would add such dimension! Let me know if you find a software to play around with the photos, I'd love to do that too :)

  14. Just stumbled upon your blog from DreamHomeDIY's FF tweet. I actually just started a side business changing rooms and homes with Photoshop. You can view the particulars here. http://www.prettyhandygirl.com

But, I can also add architectural details. ;-)

  15. Add a portico to match the clapboard, cut down the three oversized bushes that block the windows but please, don't paint the brick.
